In der wunderbaren, später vom Kommerz verschluckten Kulturzeitschrift „Transatlantik“ schrieb im Juli 1990, just als das wiedervereinigte Deutschland auf dem Boden der italienischen Hauptstadt Weltmeister (das geht auch andersherum) geworden war, schrieb Reinhard Hesse einen kleinen, feinen Text über „Unsere armselige Fußball-Literatur“. Hesse wusste, wovon er sprach, er war Redakteur dieses wunderbaren Magazins, vorher als Kriegsberichterstatter der „taz“ im Libanon gewesen, später Feuilletonist der „SZ“ und Reporter der „Woche“, Kosmopolit und Bonvivant, und in seinen letzten Lebensjahren der Kopf hinter der rot-grünen Regierung als Redenschreiber von Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder. Oder ist die Geschichte etwa nicht traurig, wie der weltreisende Trainer Rudi Gutendorf dem verschämt-naiven Rechtsaußen Reinhard Libuda beizubringen versuchte, wie der seine Rolle anlässlich eines Europapokalspiels in Irland gegenüber britischen Presseleuten erklären sollte: „I am the right wing.“ Libuda, die verwirrte Seele, wurde tatsächlich gefragt. Er sagte: „I am the white ring.“
